How We Make It

From stone to artwork

An idea may begin on paper, but an artwork takes shape when we start working with the material. Each piece requires its own approach, bringing together design, technical precision, machinery and extensive hand craftsmanship. Cutting, shaping, joining and installation are considered from the beginning so every element becomes part of one resolved composition.

We consider colour, texture, structure, natural movement and suitability for the intended design. Our relationship with quarries gives us a closer understanding of the material and helps us make informed selections. The approved design is translated into the dimensions, forms and details required for production. The way individual elements are developed and ultimately assembled is considered from the beginning. Stone is cut, shaped, carved and prepared for each artwork. Technology and machinery provide accuracy where needed, but remain tools within the process — not a substitute for craftsmanship.

Around 80% of our work is handcrafted, while some pieces are completed entirely by hand. Our permanent craftsmen bring judgement, touch and years of experience to the character of every finished piece. For complex artworks, assembly is considered as carefully as the individual components. Elements must come together accurately, safely and as intended. Installation is part of the artwork’s development, not simply the final step. The work is reviewed continuously. Details are refined, surfaces examined and elements adjusted where necessary.

Technology gives us precision. Craftsmanship gives us character. Experience brings them together. The way individual elements will be developed, connected and installed is considered from the beginning. This is especially important when a complex artwork must arrive as separate components and come together accurately on site. Installation is therefore part of the artwork’s development, not simply the final task after making is complete.
