Our Process

Where the idea meets the stone

Every artwork begins long before the stone is shaped. An idea influenced by experience, observation, places, memories and stories moves through sketches, proportions, materials and design until it begins to take physical form. Once making begins, the original idea is no longer the only voice; the material and the maker begin to shape its direction too.

Natural stone is never completely predictable. Its veins, colours, density, texture and character can influence the direction of the work. A vein may become part of the composition, a variation in colour may change a detail, or the structure of the stone may require an adjustment to the form. This is not a compromise; it is part of creating with a natural material. The design may evolve as the work develops. Proportions change, details are refined and other materials enter when they contribute something essential. Stone, marble, copper, leather and glass can come together when the idea calls for it.

The process is a dialogue between the idea, material, maker and space — not simply the execution of a predetermined drawing. Our techniques have developed through years of making, learning and refining. The team’s experience informs decisions that may seem small but significantly affect the final result. The artwork is not simply made. It evolves. The original drawing is a beginning, not a rigid conclusion. As the work develops, proportions may change, details may be refined and another material may enter when it contributes something essential. The finished artwork emerges from a continuing dialogue between the idea, the material, the maker and the space for which it is intended.
