Our Stone
A material with a character of its own
Stone is at the heart of what we do. We have a particular connection to local stone, not only for its qualities as a material, but for its relationship to the landscape, architecture and history of our region. Each finish, from rough-hewn to honed or polished, is chosen to reveal a different side of the same material.
No two pieces of natural stone are exactly alike. Colour, texture, veins, density and natural variations give every piece its own character. We select stone with these qualities in mind and allow them to contribute to the artwork. Our relationship with stone begins long before it reaches the studio. Close relationships with quarries deepen our understanding of the material at its source and help us select for the requirements of each artwork. The right stone is not necessarily the most uniform. Sometimes its character is precisely what makes it right.
We allow the material to remain as natural as possible. Our role is not to hide what nature has created, but to reveal its potential through thoughtful design and craftsmanship. Depending on the artwork, stone may be combined with marble, copper, leather, glass or other materials. Each is selected for what it contributes to the whole. We do not simply shape stone into an idea. We discover what the stone can add to it. Natural stone changes subtly with light through the day: morning sun lifts its texture, while evening light deepens its colour and shadow. We consider where a piece will sit so these qualities work in its favour. Over time, stone gains a quiet patina rather than wearing out. Simple care, such as a soft dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemicals, is usually all it needs.
